Matt Mullican: A Drawing Translates the Way of Thinking
November 21, 2008 – February 5, 2009
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 20, 6-8 pm
For over three decades, New York-based artist Matt Mullican (b. 1951, Santa Monica, CA) has created a complex body of work concerned with systems of knowledge, meaning, language, and signification. Since the end of the 1970s, he has also conducted performances and created drawings while under hypnosis as a means to explore the nature of behavior.

Wallace Shawn, on the Times of London's web-site, re: Guantanamo: "Bush has openly mocked law and proclaimed a certain pleasure in sadism and exulted in holding prisoners and mistreating and torturing them, really...Of course this affects one emotionally: my emotional life has been very strongly affected by the fact that Bush was president and my writing life is affected by my emotional life." documentary projects that walked into class tonight: video haikus by people in ad biz related to first 5 words that come to mind when they think of the post office; a zine made of drawings by regulars at a bar of things they are most afraid of; a dialogue related to what dog owners are doing for thanksgiving; men alone in donut shop and hardware store talking about their scars; people at design studio talking about recurring dreams they have--audio. topped off with 20 minutes of mary ellen mark's STREETWISE, one of my favorite films ever made.
